Artists from the festival’s faculty as well as young professionals will perform selections from “The Student Prince,” “Carmen,” “Romeo et Juliette,” “La Boheme,” “Die Fledermaus” and more. Also look for contemporary classics from “Les Miserables” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” “It’s really a potpourri of operatic favorites,” says Justin John Moniz, HPAF associate executive director and “Opera on the Rocks” stage director. “You’re getting everything from classic romantic opera to the lighter operetta and musical theater. There’s something for everyone.” Each number is paired with a different recommended drink as well, Moniz says. “This way you get more than just the musical experience — you also get to taste it on your palette,” he says. “It’s always been a fun, kick-back, relaxed type of atmosphere and the drinks are flowing.” Featured singers for this year’s “Opera on the Rocks” are HPAF Katie Young YAMANAKA Big Island Vibe w June 22 2017 5.
