A musical about fitting in, standing out At the age of 17 — in his first lead stage role — Honokaa High School senior Ryan Hooley’s greatest challenge might just be trying to make his voice sound like a 13-year-old. He’s prepping for the Kahilu Youth Troupe’s presentation of the Broadway smash, “13 the Musical,” at 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. “This is some of the most challenging music I’ve ever heard,” says Hooley of the coming-of-age musical. “The ability to have a greater singing range and make my voice sound 13 again did not come easily, but we’ve been in rehearsals 10 hours a day and I’m noticing a big difference.” The songs get stuck in his head, too. “I don’t ever stop singing,” says Hooley, who plays the lead role of Evan Goldman, a 13-year-old Jewish kid who is forced to move from New York City to Appleton, Ind., after his father has an affair and his parents divorce. Using 17 of the Kahilu Youth Troupe’s youngest rising stars (ranging in age from 11-18) the cast also includes 14-year-old HPA student Grace Bostock (who plays Patrice), Stacee Firestone (Kendra), Cameron Supplee (Archie), Lucky Friend (Brett) and Melissa Threlfall (Lucy) in the other lead roles. These characters are supported by Alianna West (Charlotte), Grace Todd (Cassie), Caitlin Hooley (Molly), Benito Mercier (Eddie), J. Bryson (Malcolm), Eric Gee (Richie) and Makana Shimizu. Completing the ensemble are Colby Camero, Ethan Tyau, AriaMarie Tyau and Rose Friend. “13 the Musical” is about fitting in Katie Young YAMANAKA Big Island Vibe w June 15 2017 4.
