8 Thursday, May 11, 2017 Island Beat Hawaii Tribune-Herald AERIAL From page 7 says show co-producer Zoe Eisenberg. Eisenberg is developing the performance with aerial instructor Bella O’Toole. “Despite the presence of a fast-growing aerial community in Kona, Kalapana and Waimea, there are very few aerial showcases happening on the Big Island,” she says. “This means little opportunity for Hawaii Island residents to see what aerial is all about. The Palace has never had an aerial-only show that I know of, although it has featured singular aerial acts in larger variety shows.” Performers for “Take Flight” include Alex Love, Chloe Frizelle, Luna Sophia Wood, Lilia Cangemi, Victoria Roos, Sarah Parnell, Alea Schechter, Maja Nilsson, Hillary Leasure, Eisenberg and O’Toole. The cast members have either trained together or taken workshops together during the past few years. “We encourage all of our artists to choreograph their own routines, which inspires more creativity and diversity in the show,” says the show’s co-producer Bella O’Toole, who also is the founder of Mirabilia Aerial. “Acts will range in emotion from dramatic to soulful and even comedic.” Several of the artists are professionally trained in circus acrobatics, aerial and/or classical dance. Many have performed and lived around the world, but currently are Big Island residents. “All art forms require technique and training, but not all of them require you to hang upside down by your ankles while you do it,” jokes Eisenberg. “While all of our performers are talented, their skills and styles vary, as do their level of experience. Some have been doing this for 15 years. They studied it professionally and have performed internationally. Others, like myself, are relatively new to it. “Maja Nilsson is a comedian and street performer, so she brings amazing comedic energy to the stage. Lilia Cangemi is a classically trained dancer with 20 years of aerial experience, so she has a very moving style full of grace and poise. Luna Sophia Wood is a powerful spoken-word poet, and a real lyricism always shines through in her choreography.” Artist Victoria Roos will be performing two numbers for this show: an aerial act on a rope and a second number on the ground that focuses on handstands on a chair and other dance acrobatics. “There are not many aerialists here on the island who decide to do rope,” says Roos, who was born in Germany and began her career in Hamburg and Berlin. “One of the reasons why I love it so much is its simplicity. Me as a mover and artist can get dynamic, lyrical, soft or whatever other quality I choose and the rope will support that quality.” Roos’ skills also include various dance moves, tight wire and partner acrobatics. After performing throughout Europe, India and Asia, Roos moved to the Big Island and teaches private and semi-private aerial silks classes in Waimea and Kona. The Rotary Club of Hilo reminds you....
