Some of the songs might be showy, but others are intimate and personal. And when I pull out that song, there’s so much emotion because I haven’t played it a lot. Or maybe I’m playing it for the first time live. The audience can feel that I’m present and they feel my excitement.” Concertgoers also can look forward to seeing Makana reunited with his go-to guitar, “Morning Star,” which was stolen from his home on Oahu in 2005 and only recently returned to him. The guitar, which was a gift from Chillingworth and toured the world with Makana, is “magic,” he says. “I just got it back in January, but it has been in the shop being repaired,” Makana says. “I can’t explain it, but that guitar makes magical things happen when I play it … and it found its way back to me after almost 12 years.” Makana is known for his dedication toward perpetuating the traditions of slack key guitar as well as evolving the traditional art form, but his repertoire also encompasses ’60s folk, original folk pop ballads, protest anthems and comedy. Widely known for lending his musical talent for social change, he has been a TEDx talk presenter and was featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy Award-winning film, “The Descendants.” “Makana concerts are some of the most beautiful slack key music you will ever hear along with some of the most innovative use of slack key,” says Morgen Bahurinsky, Palace Theater executive director. “I still remember the first time I heard him, and he was down on his knees at points totally jamming on his guitar.” She adds that this concert is a perfect way to celebrate the mother figures in your life or for anyone who appreciates beautiful music. “It’s like a garden where I plant all these seeds,” Makana says of his music. “Every song grows at its own pace. Some I’ve written in 20 minutes and some I’ve been writing for six years. It’s never forced. I only work on something when I feel a strong urge to. I don’t have a singular direction. I’m always going deeper into my Hawaiian slack key, but I’m also pioneering new ways of approaching the guitar. I look at music as a function of human emotion and the human psyche. I think it’s a powerful tool for both creator and listener.” This summer, Makana, who has records to his credit, will be working on a folk/ pop/country EP release. In the meantime, he is excited to be back in Hilo for this concert. “I just love playing in Hilo,” Makana says. “I spent a lot of my childhood in Hilo. My mom used to go visit her best friend who lived there all the time. It still feels how it did when I was growing up and I’m appreciative of that.” Adds Bahurinsky, “Makana is one of my favorite artists. As a musician he is among the very best. The Palace is honored to showcase him on our stage. I would love to see our theater filled with mothers and daughters, men and women, and whole families.” The concert is made possible in part by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
