Photo: PUA CHAPMAN Makana going ‘all out’ Internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, composer and activist Makana is set to perform in a special Mother’s Day concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Palace Theater. It has been more than a year since the protégé of the late Uncle Sonny Chillingworth has performed at the venue and, armed with his recently recovered “Morning Star” guitar, Makana plans on honoring mothers with his usual diverse repertoire including some songs never before showcased live on the stage. “I’ve written a lot of songs about the mother/child relationship,” Makana says. “I think it’s a core relationship that affects all other relationships. I don’t get to play these songs often so I will be debuting some of those. And of course I will do some of my slack key and Hawaiian songs, too.” Makana’s catalog of songs — original compositions and traditional Hawaiian pieces — is so big he would never have time to cover them all in one concert. “Of course, there are key songs my fans always want to hear, but I also don’t do the same show twice,” he says. “I’m a really organic artist and I do my work solo so I love doing spontaneous live performances. That’s my sweet spot. I’ve literally written songs in front of an audience from scratch.” Doing that feels natural, Makana says.
