Ultimi 3 Tenors bring talents to Big Island Isaac Hurtado had spent years in the same area of Utah as fellow tenors Tyler Nelson and Brian Stucki — competing for the same teaching positions and opera roles — until he finally had an idea for the three to join forces. Thus, Ultimi 3 Tenors was born in 2014. Between them, they have performed on opera stages around the world in more than 100 leading roles, but Hurtado admits at first he had no idea how they would sound together. “It fell together strangely well,” says Hurtado, the founding member of Ultimi (pronounced ool-tee me). “We didn’t want to blend — we wanted to still have our individual voices. But how would it be? Turns out the different sizes, weights and colors of our voices were really cool together.” Of the three, Hurtado says he has the heavier, or bigger, voice. “Tyler is one of the most beautiful, bright, light lyric tenors you will ever hear,” he continues. “He is elegant, clear, agile … a stunning voice. Brian is a darker version of Tyler — he has a little more chocolate and autumn color in his sound but is every bit as agile as Brian and has breath that lasts forever. Both of them do, actually. It all ties together.” Though all three men are college professors as well as singers/musicians, they have spent the past three years traveling throughout the country performing as a tenor trio to the delight of audiences nationwide. “We do things from lighter, almost popular-type songs to musical theater, crossover pieces and even opera,” Hurtado says. “It’s a big variety that is all arranged for tenor voices. We may have an opera and symphony sound, but we can morph into different styles.” The world’s love of tenor concerts began in Rome in 1990 when Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras performed in the first Three Tenors concert, says Genette Freeman, Katie Young YAMANAKA Big Island Vibe w May 11 2017 6.
