Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, April 6, 2017 3 Makana brings ‘slack rock’ to Aloha Theater Internationally acclaimed singer, composer and guitarist Makana is appearing in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Aloha Theater in Kainaliu, South Kona. Makana’s unique blend of Hawaiian, folk and rock influences and the passion and energy of his performance engage audiences in a way few entertainers can. Considered one of the greatest living players of the rare and complex art of slack-key guitar, Makana is a protégé of the legendary players including Bobby Moderow Jr. and the late master Sonny Chillingworth. His “slack rock” style infuses the traditional slack key sound with elements of bluegrass, rock, blues and raga and his playing has garnered critical acclaim. Guitar Player magazine ranked him as one of the top-three guitarists in America, and the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts recently gave him the Slack Key Guitar Legacy Award. Described as “dazzling” by The New York Times, Makana’s music is featured on three Grammy-nominated albums and the soundtrack of the Academy Award-winning film “The Descendants.” He has performed worldwide in venues ranging from Tianjin Opera House to Bumbershoot in Seattle to WOMAD in England to The White House. Makana has shared the stage with Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis Costello. Makana is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change. In 2011, at the apex of the “Occupy” movement, Makana’s song “We Are the Many” went viral on YouTube, garnering more than a half-million views. The song was coined the “Occupy Anthem” by Rolling Stone magazine. Makana celebrated his 25th anniversary as a musician in 2014 with two albums. “Ripe” was fully funded by fans via Kickstarter and produced by legends Ron Nevison (Led Zeppelin and The Who) and Mitchell Froom (Crowded House and Elvis Costello). His double album, “25,” is captured fully in analog and only available at live performances. Doors open at 7 p.m. and admission is $25 for back row seats, $25 general admission and $48 for gold circle.
