Hawaii Tribune-Herald Classical musicians, diverse song lineup to highlight Sunday concert F rom Schubert’s classics, Rachmaninoff’s romantic harmonies and the world premiere of a contemporary Hawaiian piece, the Hawaii Concert Society presents a chamber music concert for audiences of all tastes. The event features soprano Rachel Schutz accompanied by her husband, pianist Jonathan Korth, and clarinetist James Moffitt from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Sunday at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center. “It is unusual that our state has resident classical musicians of such national and international renown as Rachel and Jon and so we are delighted to include them in our season,” says Hawaii Concert Society President Tom Geballe. “Rachel last sang for us in 2010 and Jonathan has been in several of our past seasons, performing with musicians both from the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and from outside our state. “Their program contains traditional and unusual art song and chamber music from around the world and will be a memorable and entertaining concert experience.” The concert will include one of Schubert’s best-loved pieces, “Shepherd on the Rock,” and the world premiere of composer Jeff Myers’ “The Hula Mano” (Shark Dance). Also featured will be music by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, English composer Benjamin Britten and American composer Jack Gottlieb. “I want you to get swept up in the music,” Schutz says. “There will be something for everyone — classical buffs, romantic buffs and contemporary buffs. We will present some diverse repertoire and we’re lucky to have James Moffitt, who plays in the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, with us. The addition of the clarinet adds more color and another dimension to the sound.” Schutz says half of the concert will feature Moffitt, and other pieces will showcase the duo of piano and voice. “The Gottlieb pieces are very unknown pieces … kind of jazzy,” she explains of the program. “The Rachmaninoff songs are very romantic with rich, beautiful colors. We’re also doing a set of songs from Scandanavia, which are just beautiful. I heard them a few years ago and thought, ‘I need to find an opportunity to perform these.’” Schutz says that this particular concert program is unusual in that they are incorporating pieces sung in many different languages. the music Rachel Schutz Jonathan Korth James Moffitt See CONCERT Page 9 By KATIE YOUNG YAMANAKA Special to the Tribune-Herald
