2 Thursday, March 9, 2017 Organist Joey Fala headlines concert For the first time in Hilo, the 12th annual Spring Concert of the Hawaii Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will be presented with Hilo’s largest pipe organ at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Higashi Hongwanji Mission, on the corner of Mohouli and Kapiolani streets. The free concert celebrates the return of award-winning organist Joey Fala to Hawaii, with works by some of the greats of music composition. “Especially for a recital like this, I like to present a varied program that demonstrates the wide variety of musical styles represented by the organ repertoire,” Fala says. “There will be everything from Bach, considered to be the father of organ music, to some jazz by George Shearing. We’ll also hear a masterpiece by Cesar Franck, an influential French romantic composer who started a trend to treat the organ like an orchestra.” The Higashi Hongwanji pipe organ was built by the Wicks Organ Co. in Illinois and installed in 1962, thanks to a donation by Mrs. C.C. Kennedy. “This organ has always been used by Higashi Hongwanji for their regular services, but as far as we know, the organ has not been in a public concert since its dedication concert was played by Dr. Frank Tabrah in 1962,” says AGO chapter member Bob Adler, “(Organist) Rick Mazurowski and I talked it over and both felt that this was the right time for this magnificent March 09 2017 4.
