Working full time with family members is not for everyone; we each have very different personalities, which actually works well for us because we use each other as a sounding board. “We definitely disagree at times and it can be virtually impossible to keep personal issues from creeping into our work space. We continue to learn and figure out how to balance our work lives and personal lives. It all comes down to the fact that we are doing what we love with people we love. That is very special.” From an early age, Ramaswamy says she loved how dance connected her to her ancestry. “Raised both in India and the U.S., I relish finding a balance between two cultures and feeling the irresistible pull of both countries,” she says. “My company has made a name for itself over the years for dynamic group choreography, and I am extremely proud of that. But for me, the solo performance is like a prayer, like coming home. “‘They Rose at Dawn’ is the culmination of years of fastidious study and absolute focus. For this production, the dances and the ideas behind them are mine. Ranee is vital in her role as a guide and gives me invaluable feedback, but this work is very personal.” She adds that it is always their intention and hope to make an emotional impact on the viewer with each performance. “What we do is ancient in origin but not in content — we present completely original work that combines a contemporary Western aesthetic with an Indian ethos,” she says.
