Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, March 2, 2017 3 Volcano Art Center is presenting a collection of original acrylic paintings by David K. Hayes and Daniel Van Zyle through March 26 in the center’s gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The “Life of the Land” exhibition features Hawaiian flora and fauna within their respective ecosystems. The detailed depictions of rare and endemic wildlife exposes viewers to the treasury of Hawaiian aviary life as well as the ecological uniqueness and diversity of the land that supports them. The majority of the artwork on display will feature recent paintings by both artists, however, Van Zyle also is displaying a few of his rare graphite drawings as well as his stone lithographs for which he is well-known. Hayes was born and raised in Hawaii and has lived in the islands his entire life. He graduated from Saint Louis School in Honolulu and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has been a member of several artist guilds and conservation organizations through the years and has been awarded in several juried showings. Conservation of remote places in Hawaii’s landscape and the wildlife found there has become a major theme in Hayes’ art. This exhibition presents a unique opportunity for three conservation groups within Hawaii to benefit from partial proceeds of sales of Hayes’ work: the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project, Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program and the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii. Van Zyle has worked in Hawaii for more than 50 years and is almost alone in his mastery of the demanding technique of stone lithography. A critic observed that Van Zyle’s work is “united by a keen observation and attention to detail with virtuoso drawing skills that create a pure and precise vision of the beauty and vulnerability of Hawaii’s wildlife.” His numerous distinctions include being named Hawaii’s Audubon Society Artist for 1989-90 and Hawaii Ducks Unlimited Artists in 1992 and 1994. Hawaii residents might recognize his illustrations from the cover art for telephone books. His works are part of the permanent collections of Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Honolulu Museum of Art.
