Hawaii Tribune-Herald In what one can only imagine would be the ultimate ’80s theme party, artist Lisa Lisa — frontwoman of the band Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam and the voice behind some of the decade’s most memorable songs, including “All Cried Out” and “Lost in Emotion” — threw an ’80s bash last year to commemorate her 50th birthday. “We went all out,” says Lisa (born Lisa Velez). “I re-created the album cover of ‘All Cried Out.’ It was hilarious. I did the hair with the headband … It was so much fun. We had a DJ but my band members were there too. We just got on stage and played for two hours.” Lisa says there are lots of things she misses from the ’80s: neon colors, glitter and big hair, for example. “Trendwise, it was fun,” she says. “We could go out and not care. That was the best. Nowadays, everything is so put together. (raspberry sound). Boring!” Though Lisa is still creating new music and has her hands in all sorts of other artistic projects, including independent film producing and acting, it’s apparent she still loves all things from that decade. So, she was the perfect fit to headline Saturday’s “Crazy for the ’80s” concert at 7 p.m. at Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium.
