Dick Mortemore, artist and educator, displayed his first “From the Highway” exhibit in 1972. This year, Mortemore invited local artists Carol Tredway and Reyn Ojiri, photographers Lanaya Deily and Jen Osborn and ceramic artist Emily Herb to interpret their versions of “From the Highway.” Meanwhile, the Fountain Gallery’s extended exhibit, “Before There Was a Park” by William Sewell, depicting the footprint of the Wailoa State Recreation Area before the 1960 tsunami, also will be on display. Mortemore’s passion for the environment has led him to illustrating and writing articles about wildlife for national publications, publish a series of nature guides about Hawaiian wildlife, become director of the Keakealani Outdoor Education Center and director of the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo. He received a state Conservation Award for his work in environmental education for the children of Hawaii. His paintings of birds and animals in their natural habitat are in private collections in 28 states and England. Wailoa Center is a Division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources. It is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center is closed Saturday, Sunday and state holidays.
