4 Thursday, December 22, 2016 Island Beat Hawaii Tribune-Herald Jake Shimabukuro headlines HPAF concerts Hawaii Performing Arts Festival has three concerts scheduled for early 2017. “From a rare 1708 Stradivarius violin in live performance to the legendary Jake Shimabukuro to the dramatic vocals of three exciting tenors, there’s something for just about everyone,” said Genette Freeman, HPAF executive director. The high season concerts kick off with “Stradivarius!” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at Hiilani Ecohouse near Honokaa. Jeff Thayer, concertmaster of the San Diego Symphony, will perform on a rare Stradivarius instrument crafted in 1708, accompanied by pianist Cary Lewis of the Lanier Trio. Tickets for this intimate concert are $70, including wine and pupus, and seating is extremely limited. Shimabukuro, Hawaii’s own world-famous ‘ukulele virtuoso, plays Friday, Feb. 10, at the Hoaloha Pavilion at the Mauna Lani Bay Resort. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with HPAF’s annual Not-So- Silent Auction, featuring a diverse selection of musical, hospitality, travel and original art items donated to raise funds for HPAF scholarships and the 2017 Summer Festival. Known worldwide by music lovers as simply Jake, Shimabukuro can still remember the first time he held a ukulele at age 4. That encounter shaped his life and gave the world one of the most exceptional and innovative ukulele players in the history of the instrument, an artist who has been compared to musical titans such as Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. He’ll be playing selections from his latest CD, “Nashville Sessions,” and other favorites. Pupus are available for pre-purchase and there will be a cash bar. General admission tickets are at the special holiday price of $75 until Christmas Eve, when the ticket price will go to $95. Then, ULTIMI 3 Tenors comes to the Big Island for a pair of performances: Wednesday, May 17, at the Palace Theater in Hilo and Friday, May 19, at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Showtimes both days are 7 p.m. In 1990, the original Three Tenors, Placido Domingo, the late Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras, performed in concert against a dramatic backdrop in Rome and made music history. Suddenly, the world’s love affair with multiple tenor concerts was ignited. Tickets for the Hilo performance at the Palace are $25, available at the Palace box office at 934-7010. Tickets are $60 for the May 19 Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel performance. Information and tickets for all performances are available online at www.hawaiiperformingartsfestival. org/tickets or by calling 333-7378 (40 percent of all ticket purchases are tax deductible).
