Hawaii Tribune-Herald UH-Hilo Christmas concert features diverse pieces, voices By KATIE YOUNG YAMANAKA Special to the Tribune-Herald T he Hilo music community is coming together to perform holiday classics, favorites and more during the annual “Holiday Card to Hilo: Christmas Around the World” at 2 p.m. Sunday at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center. The UH-Hilo Kapili Choir and University Chorus, Orchid Isle Orchestra, Hilo Community Chorus and VOICES join together in a joyful concert for the whole family. Pianist Walter Greenwood also will be on stage throughout, and UH-Hilo drama professor Jackie Pualani Johnson will present a special Christmas story with local flair. Amy Horst, conductor and director for the UH-Hilo choral program and Kapili Choir, says audiences can expect the same great music and fun holiday spirit they’ve come to expect from “Holiday Card to Hilo” concerts of the past, which are always a sellout event. “This is a very traditional familyoriented concert,” Horst explains. “It’s always titled, ‘Holiday Card to Hilo’ and we pick a different theme every year.” Horst says this year’s theme, “Christmas Around the World,” was inspired by the university’s choral program itself, which draws a number of mainland and international students.. “We get local kids but also students from Sweden, See CONCERT Page 9 “Holiday Card to Hilo: Christmas Around the World” is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday at the UH-Hilo Performing Arts Center.
