Sakada Day celebration set for Dec.18 in Honokaa The second annual Sakada Day celebration is slated for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center, 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa. There is no admission charge to attend the event and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Sakada Day was enacted by the 2015 state Legislature to honor those contract workers, or sakadas, who were recruited from the Philippines by the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association from 1906-46. During this span of 40 years, more than 120,000 Filipinos arrived in Hawaii to work in the sugar and pineapple fields on all the islands. Of significance to Hawaii Island is that the first 15 sakadas to arrive were assigned to the Olaa Sugar Mill. Exhibits of plantation artifacts and photographs of plantation life will be on display. Entertainment will be performed by a variety of local talents. Filipino music, dances and songs also will be performed. There will be demonstrations showing how to make parols (Christmas stars), prepare Filipino salads and desserts, and create flower arrangements. One workshop will be about the many uses of plants brought from the Philippines. For more information, call Romel Dela Cruz at 775- 0768 or 937-9478.
