Moore, Richard Kind, Stephen Spinella Directed by: Jeremy Profe This film offers the unheard true story of the moments after John Lennon was shot as seen through the eyes of those who lived it. Huffington Post: “To Profeʼs great credit, the film doesnʼt sensationalize Lennonʼs senseless murder, but rather, offers a minute-by-minute account of the actions of the first responders and journalists who experienced its immediate aftermath” $8 Gen. - $7 Student/Senior 38 Haili St. • 934-7777 www.hilopalace.com Saturday at the Honokaa People’s Theatre. He also will be performing on Oahu and Maui during his Hawaii tour. Audiences likely can look forward to hearing a few songs from his latest album, “Find a Way to Care,” as part of the concert. Produced by Mayall and Forty Below’s Eric Corne, “Find a Way to Care” was recorded at the House of Blues Studio in Encino, Calif. In addition to Mayall (vocals, piano, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer, clarinet, guitar and harmonica), Rocky Athas can be heard on lead and rhythm guitar, Greg Rzab on bass and Jay Davenport on drums. “As always, I really enjoyed the making of ‘Find a Way to Care’ and the band is very well-featured throughout,” Mayall says. “I was happy that this time around I got to feature more of my keyboard work which has also been a helpful guide to new songs that work well in the current trio format. We were fortunate to be able to enhance several of the tracks with the addition of a horn section, too.” The even-dozen tracks on “Find a Way to Care” include a group of new songs and savvy covers of “Mother in Law Blues” (Don Robey), “The River’s Invitation” (Percy Mayfield), “I Feel So Bad” (Lightnin’ Hopkins), “Long Distance Call” (Muddy Waters), “I Want All My Money Back” (Lee Baker) and “Drifting Blues” (Charles Brown). Speaking about this particular album, Mayall says, “I chose an assemblage of songs that includes perhaps some slightly lesser-known bluesmen, and that all had either different beats or special instrumental treatments. I also found three songs that would be further enhanced by the addition of horns.” Added to the mix are original songs that feature Mayall’s take on the current human condition, as well as universal truths. “As always, I draw from my own experiences and thoughts about things in my life so that from album to album I create an ongoing musical diary of my life,” he explains. “The blues never lets me down!” Through the years, Mayall’s band members have included the likes of Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac and Mick Taylor, formerly of the Rolling Stones. “Find a Way to Care” arrived following an especially exciting period of music from Mayall that included the 2014 release of his first studio album in five years, “A Special Life,” and the April 2015 release of “John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers – Live in 1967 (Never Before Heard Live Performances).” These albums were followed by a second volume of “Bluesbreakers” tracks in May 2016. The live albums, showcasing Mayall’s band that had been together just three months, are critically lauded archival recordings of one of the best of his Bluesbreakers band lineups which featured Mayall, former Fleetwood Mac frontman Peter Green on lead guitar, John McVie on bass and Fleetwood on drums. Mayall’s band has gone through numerous changes, the most recent of which occurred earlier this year when Texas thunderstorms prevented Athas from making a festival gig. Mayall went on with Rzab and Davenport as a trio. It turns out the combination lent a new slant to the music and the group headed in a new direction. The trio, says Mayall, is his best band yet. “From that point on I found it was a stimulating new approach to my performance,” Mayall explains. “Ever since then, we have been at a creative high and I’m very happy that we will be able to give our fans in the Islands a terrific experience at our shows.” It seems Mayall never skips a beat and is all set to release yet another album early next year. “The same guys are also on display on the forthcoming album ‘Talk About That,’ due out in January,” he says. “We were also thrilled that the great Joe Walsh wanted to join us on a couple of tracks and his performance adds a new texture to the songs.” Mayall says the new album contains even more of his original compositions. “It’s always great to add my personal stories to the mix,” he says. “I’ve never had any trouble in that department. The themes are all reflections of my life put to music.” BLUES From page 7 Photo: DAVID GOMEZ Jay Davenport, John Mayall and Greg Rzab formed a trio earlier this year.
