East Hawaii’s keiki got talent As part of its outreach to young people in the community, the Palace Theater will present “Spotlight on Youth” at 2 p.m. Saturday, an event in cooperation with local performance art groups to showcase the variety of options keiki in East Hawaii have to make performance art a valuable part of their lives. Children ages 16 and younger will present everything from singing and dancing to juggling and aerial acrobatics. Look for performers from Anuenue Children’s Chorus, Emery Aceret’s Halau Na Pua ‘O Uluhaimalama, Hiccup Circus, N2Dance and Paradise Performing Arts Center. “With art education being overlooked in the public schools, it is important to support these private schools that enlighten our young people about the value of their voice, their talent and their artistic abilities,” says Palace Theater Executive Director Morgen Bahurinsky. Wendy Peskin, Palace Theater board president adds, “Most of these performance schools do not have a stage. We hope to partner with them throughout the year to offer children the experience of showcasing their talent on a stage before a live theater audience. “Some of these young people may go on to become a kumu hula themselves or study drama at UH-Hilo. Others may discover a passion for performance that gives them a lifelong hobby being a part of live theater. Part of the Palace mission is to educate, entertain and inspire. We need to start with the keiki if we are to succeed.” N2 Dance will feature a range of group and solo numbers — hiphop, contemporary jazz and vocals. Kyra Grace will perform the song “Believe,” Zarah Paresa will showcase a contemporary piece, “Ballerina,” and Kekuahiwi Woods will dance “Lazarus, a solo hip-hop piece. Other Nov. 24 2016 4.
