Hawaiian Hawaii Tribune-Herald Ukulele, slack key guitar masters to share skills during festival Some of Hawaii’s most treasured musicians — Sonny Lim, Jeff Peterson, Nathan Aweau, Benny Chong, Ledward Kaapana and Mike Kaawa — will be on-island this weekend as Kahilu Theatre presents the 14th annual Waimea ‘Ukulele and Slack Key Guitar Festival today through Saturday featuring concerts, workshops and educational outreach. New to the festival this year are Hilo-based musician Kainani Kahaunaele and Waikoloa steel guitar player Iaukea Bright. The weekend of events is centered around education and the perpetuation of these Hawaiian music forms. “In this digital era, we want to bring the collective experience of live performance to a prominent place in our lives and in our community,” explains Kahilu Theatre Executive Director Deb Goodwin.
