4 Thursday, November 17, 2016 Island Beat Hawaii Tribune-Herald Hundreds view work of ukulele, other craftsmen More than 1,300 visitors from the local community and around the world attended the 12th annual Big Island Ukulele Stringed Instrument Show in October at Wailoa Center in Hilo. Along with the ukulele display, visitors enjoyed seeing furniture and wood products made by Big Island craftsmen, glass work by Heather Mettler and photography by Beau Jack Imua Key. Ballots were available to visitors to vote for their favorite ukulele. After all the ballots were totaled, No. 2 Pele’s Fire by Crist Pung won the People’s Choice Award. Ballot entries submitted during the show were drawn for prizes. Kala Music Co. donated the grand prize of a Kala Elite Series U.S.-made koa tenor ukulele. The ukulele was won by Danny Ortega of Hilo. The grand prize and winner are a perfect match: Ortega and his family attend all the Wailoa shows and they were ecstatic about receiving the koa ukulele. Other donations for raffle drawings were made by Kiernan Music, Music Exchange, Roger’s Guitars and Hilo Guitars and Ukuleles. Awapuhi Farms and Mill donated Spanish cedar wood and Pegasus Guitars & Ukuleles donated a curly mango wood set for the Curator’s Choice Award, presented to Pung. Aloha Woods donated four $25 gift certificates that were used for the four honorary mention awards winners: Chris Stewart, Tom Mullen, Doug Powdrell and Lewis Draxlir. Wailoa Center thanks all the other donors and numerous volunteers who help make this exhibit possible year after year. APAC offers ‘Dance Audition’ workshop Aloha Performing Arts Company will offer a three-session “Dance Audition” workshop from 10 a.m.- noon on three consecutive Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The instructor will be professional dancer, educator, director and choreographer Ellen Farnsworth. Originally from Los Angeles, Farnsworth worked for many years in Denver where she owned her own production company.
