Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, November 17, 2016 3 A celebration of family Second annual ‘Ohana Day at Lincoln Park set for Saturday The second annual ‘Ohana Day at Lincoln Park is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Downtown Hilo park. The event is billed as “a celebration of children and family,” according to organizer Pepe Romero. “We want to concentrate on the kids because it is a park with a playground,” Romero said. “Last year, we had about 250 people; this year, we’re expecting more.” Admission is free and the event is alcohol- and drug-free. Keiki activities will include the newly renovated playground, bouncing castles and water slides, and free hot dogs, chili and rice and Keiki IDs provided by the Hawaii Police Department. The department’s DARE team will be there. “We’re going to have food vendors there this time, too,” Romero said. Entertainment includes music by Ben Kaili & Friends, Randy Lorenzo & Friends, the Christy Lassiter Trio and Jeri Gertz. There’s also hula by Halauolaokalani, Hula Halau O Kou Lima Nani ‘E, Halau Hula O Hilo Hanakahi and Halau Na Pua ‘O Uluhaimalama. “We asked the halau to bring their keiki dancers,” Romero said. Uncle Pat Kahawaiola‘ a will emcee. “We’re hoping for a nice day, weatherwise, but the county is putting up a couple of 20-by- 30 tents, just in case,” Romero said. “The county has been great about helping us and I want to thank them.” Last year’s inaugural event was the culmination of the efforts of a citizen group calling itself Take Back Lincoln Park and the group’s committee is again involved in the event, but Romero stressed ‘Ohana Day “is not, in any way, a political or protest forum.” “It’s just a day in a beautiful park to celebrate children and family,” he said.
