Celtica Pipes Rock plays bagpipe standards such as “Amazing Grace” and “Scotland the Brave,” Celtic classics such as “What Shall You Do With a Drunken Sailor” and “Whiskey in the Jar,” plus rock faves including “Smoke on the Water,” “Thunderstruck” and “We Will Rock You.” Bass player Harald Weinkum says the bagpipes are the “lead instrument” and the “main focus” of the band. “There’s hardly any singing. The accompaniment, though, is definitely rock band-style,” he said. The 34-year-old Hawley also is returning to the Big Island after playing the Bayfront Kava Bar in Downtown Hilo in November 2015. “I had a great time playing there and caught a few waves there and decided to come back as soon as I could,” said Hawley, who lists his influences as “Bob Marley, Lowell George (Little Feat), Johnny Cash (and) J.J. Cale.” “It was fun. It was kind of a rainy night. I had local musicians sit in and that was fun,” he said. “I just felt the whole vibe of the whole town of Hilo. There was kind of the whole vibe of the Old West, going back in time a little bit, the whole cowboy influence, the paniolo.” The native Californian also loves that Hilo is an ocean town. “If anyone wants to show me around surfwise, come say ‘hi’ at the show. That’s one of the other things I’m looking to do, get in the water,” he said. Hawley has just released his seventh album, “Live at the Stronghold.” “It’s from my birthday in 2010. The reason I put it out is because it’s from a venue that was kind of a speakeasy in Venice Beach, where I live,” he said. Hawley also keeps a busy touring schedule. He’ll be going to Costa Rica after his Hawaii swing and will return to Venice Beach to play at its annual sign-lighting ceremony in early December. He’s also looking to share the bill with Celtica Pipes Rock. “My Celtic roots are going to come out for that show, I think. My great-grandfather came here from Scotland, so I’m definitely excited to be part of that,” he said. Email John Burnett at jburnett@hawaiitribune-herald. com.
