8 Thursday, November 3, 2016 Island Beat Hawaii Tribune-Herald Parade grand marshal Maj. Gen. Joe Logan gives the shaka during the 2015 Hawaii Island Veterans Parade on Kamehameha Avenue. HOLLYN JOHNSON/Tribune-Herald Three parade marshals will be honored this year: The military grand marshal will be in honor of the late Sen. Gil Kahele. His family will march to salute his legacy. The community parade marshal is Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home and the business parade marshal is KTA Super Stores. “The late state Sen. Gil Kahele, who started in the USMC as a young man, is someone whose legacy is that of a lifetime of service,” Lewis says. “The community parade marshal was added last year to recognize and honor a community group making a difference every day in the lives of our veterans and veteran families. The Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home demonstrates the kind of nurturing environment that one amazing group of caring, talented and committed people can create.” The business parade marshal is new this year, honoring the businesses shaping the community through superb service and products matched by generosity of spirit and aloha, Lewis says. “KTA Super Stores is a business that has set a standard of excellence and compassion for 100 years,” she said. Parade units will include active military members, veterans organizations, JROTC units from local high schools, marching bands and other musical groups, military equipment, local businesses, civic clubs, community and children’s groups, equestrian units and much more. “There is no one else doing a parade like this for Veterans Day on this island,” Lewis says. “Every year, the parade is growing. It’s about honoring service. We are setting the bar high to honor those who serve each other. We create an environment where everybody can celebrate and have a good time.” VETERANS From page 7 See VETERANS Page 9
