Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, November 3, 2016 5 Hawai‘i Nei exhibition opens Friday at Wailoa The public is invited to the Hawai‘i Nei art contest opening receptions Friday at the Wailoa Center in Hilo. Hawai‘i Nei is a juried art exhibition celebrating the native flora and fauna of Hawaii Island hosted by the Three Mountain Alliance, Natural Area Reserves System and the Wailoa Center. Amateur and professional artists of all ages were invited to submit works of art celebrating the native plants, animals and habitats of this beloved island, Hawai‘i Nei. This year’s youth reception will take place from 4:30-5:30 p.m. followed by the formal reception and award ceremony for the adult division from 5:30-7:30. Winners of each category will be announced and prizes awarded along with live music by Diana Aki & Friends, a photo booth and refreshments. Come dressed as your favorite native species for the annual costume contest at 5:30 p.m. The receptions are free and all ages are welcome. Artwork will be displayed starting Friday at the Wailoa Center from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Read all about it in the “Apapane in Mamane” by Carol Tredway. Monday through Friday (closed on Thanksgiving) and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday until Dec. 15.
