Black & White Night & music & art & food & more The lights are on and the doors are open for the mega block party known as Black & White Night — the one night a year that inspires Hiloans to come out dressed in their best black and white outfits to enjoy stores and restaurants that stay open late, with free music and other fun all around town. This year’s 16th annual Black & White Night is Friday. The Hilo Downtown Improvement Association is coordinating the event, which includes a street festival on Haili Street, night market, selfie contest and the after-party at the Palace Theater. Haili Street will be closed (from Bayfront to Keawe Street) from 5 to 9 p.m. for the market, where there will be live entertainment on a stage set up outside the Palace Theater, food vendors, crafts and other merchandise for sale. “The DIA sponsored three hugely successful street festivals and night markets over the summer months and decided as the grand finale for this year, we would do one in conjunction with Black & White Night and what will be going on inside the theater lobby,” says Leslie Sears, DIA board of directors member and co-coordinator of Black & White Night. Sears says close to 3,000 people showed up for the summer events. A Mehana and Hawaii Nui beer lounge will be set up in the lobby of the theater, with music from Jazz x 2 and a photo booth for picture-happy folks. Black & White Night revelers also can snap photos at one of the many “registered selfie spots” to win prizes including Hawaii Forest & Trail eco-adventures, helicopter rides and vacation stays at the Naniloa Hotel. More than $2,000 in prizes were given away last year. The Palace Theater also is the Nov. 03 2016 5.
