Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, October 13, 2016 5 ‘Orchids Around the World’ at VAC “Will an orchid from the Himalayan mountains grow in a climate like Volcano?” Knowing where your orchids come from is a clue to how to grow them — hot or cold, wet or dry. If you’re growing an orchid from the Himalayas, it wants to be kept cool. If it’s from the steamy jungles of New Guinea, it wants to be warm. Want to know more? Join Ben Oliveros, Larry Kuekes and Shelby Smith from the Hilo Orchid Society for “Orchids Around the World” from 9 a.m.- noon Saturday at the Volcano Art Center. Kuekes will take participants on a quick world tour to show where in the world some of the orchids we grow come from. Smith will demonstrate how to divide and re-pot orchids and Oliveros will discuss the orchids he has loved — and killed. Other tips will be shared on how to keep your orchid thriving. The workshop is perfect for orchid hobbyists or those with a budding orchid addiction. Not only will people learn a thing or two about orchids, the Orchid Society also will provide everyone with a plant to take home. The orchid workshop will take place at VAC’s Niaulani Campus. The QUICK • CLEAN Get your chores done! Suds n Duds Laundry Services cost is $25; $20 for VAC members. For more information or to register, call 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter. org.
