4 Thursday, October 13, 2016 Island Beat Hawaii Tribune-Herald An evening with Rachel Schutz and Jon Korth Hawaii Performing Arts Festival launches its 2016-17 high-season concert schedule with a performance by internationally renowned soprano Rachel Schutz and her collaborative pianist husband, Jonathan Korth, at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at Kahilu Theatre’s Mike Luce Studio. Schutz, born in Wales, and Korth, born in Iowa, make up one of Hawaii’s most accomplished musical couples. Schutz recently won first prize at the National Teachers of Singing competition in Chicago, and in 2016, has performed in New York, South Africa, Chicago, Berlin and Thailand. With a diverse background of musical theater and opera roles, ranging from Joanna in “Sweeney Todd” (at Hawaii Opera Theatre) last season, to Papagena in “The Magic Flute,” she is in demand throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. After his debut at Carnegie Hall and performances around the world, Korth moved to Hawaii in 2008 to join the music faculty of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Schutz and Korth have an innovative repertoire, ranging from standard to contemporary art songs. On Nov. 5, the team will perform favorite arias, popular art song, classical musical theater and works from the American songbook.
