2 Thursday, October 13, 2016 After long hiatus, venerable variety band returning to Hilo Society of Seven founding member Tony Ruivivar can still recall one of the group’s first concerts in the late 1960s at the Hilo Armory. The ceilings were too high and they couldn’t hang the lights for the show. “The Hilo fire brigade came down with the hook and ladder,” Ruivivar remembers. “They helped us hang the lights. It was so great — an example of Hawaii’s kokua.” Ruivivar has many fond memories of past Hilo performances, though the Society of Seven hasn’t performed in concert on the Big Island in decades. That’s about to change as SOS has two shows scheduled for 5 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Grand Naniloa Hotel’s Willie K Crown Room, presented by Ke‘ala’s Hair Beautique and FearlessHawaiian.com. “It’s the first time we’ll be doing a show on the Big Island in a long time,” Ruivivar says. “We normally come back to Hawaii to perform once a year but typically we do shows on Oahu. This time, we thought we’d go visit the Neighbor Islands. We’re really excited about coming back.” SOS were Waikiki headliners in the main showroom of the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel for more than 30 years, but currently reside in Las Vegas. From their “ninth island” home base, they travel to their gigs at Native Americans casinos and other venues in Nevada and Oct. 13 2016 4.
