Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, October 6, 2016 3 ONE GALLERY an artists’ collective Art & Wine Classes 961-2787 $35 onegalleryhawaii.com Ukulele Guild stringed instrument exhibit kicks off Friday The 12th annual Big Island Ukulele Guild Stringed Instrument Exhibit, in conjunction with the Hawaii Island Art Alliance’s 11th annual Big Island Woodworkers and Artists Invitational, takes place this month at Wailoa Center in Hilo, featuring multiple collaborations and new exhibit features. On display Friday through Oct. 27, the free exhibit features the work of ukulele builders from the Big Island and Maui and fine woodworkers showcasing furniture, sculpture and bowls made of native and exotic woods. Show curator Bob Gleason says there will be an ongoing video presentation this year about crafting ukulele as well as new displays about the history of ukulele-making and early ukulele music. “The video is produced in the shop of ukulele maker Peter Hurney from Pohaku Ukulele,” Gleason says. “Most people have never experienced the story of how an ukulele is made by hand.” He adds that the exhibit features a display of vintage sheet music and graphic arts from the early 1900s, and replicas of historical ukulele from Hawaii. Two hand-picked artists also will present their work: glass artist Heather Mettler and nature photographer and Hawaiian master craftsman Beau Jack Key.
