Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, September 22, 2016 5 ‘Guitar Slingers’ Dupio and Matsuda rock the Tavern tonight Two of the Big Island’s foremost rock guitarists will rock the house together tonight from 7-10 p.m. at Hilo Town Tavern. “Lightning” Larry Dupio who’s made his mark as a rock and blues-rock guitarist on Hawaii Island, in Honolulu and Portland, Ore., is teaming up with Wesley Matsuda, the fret-burning axe man in the ever-popular Hilo band Girls Nite Out, for “Guitar Slingers,” a benefit for The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank. All ages are welcome. Admission is $10 at the door, $8 with a donation of one canned food item or more to The Food Basket. Gonzo, the talented bassist-around-town who’s presenting the show, said seeing Dupio and Matsuda together onstage is a Halley’s comet-level rarity. “They’re both so potent guitar players, so phenomenal, that having both of them onstage is like a shot and a beer. To get them both onstage at the same time is going to be really flammable,” Gonzo said. Gonzo, of course will break out the bass and anchor the rhythm section, with Sean Kenny on drums. “I’m blessed with the enviable position to make people happy for a living. Not many people are in that position,” he said. “At this point, in my career, I’m blessed to get to work with some of the best on the island. Not am I lucky enough to get to work with Larry and Wes, both, I can consider them my friends, which is really something to me.” In addition, many of Hilo’s foremost musicians and vocalists will be making guest appearances, including guitarist singer Trever Veilleux of Technical Difficulties and The Ing Crowd — who also directs the University of Hawaii at Hilo Jazz Orchestra. Others include Suzanne MacAdam, Mayumi Long and Indi Gallina. Also appearing is Chris Campbell as James Brown. Campbell recently headlined his own tribute show as the “Godfather of Soul” at the tavern, which is downtown at 168 Keawe St. “He doesn’t do many shows. It’s special to get him to come out as James Brown,” Gonzo said. High-octane brass will be provided by the Cold Sweat Horns — trumpeter Josh Timmons, trombonist Vince D’Angelo and saxophonist Payton Meyer. “And of course, anyone who brings one or more canned goods gets in for $8,” Gonzo said. “You don’t have to bring only one. We’d welcome anyone who wants to bring, say, a case of “Lightning” Larry Dupio, left, and Wesley Matsuda headline the “Guitar Slingers” benefit for the Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank, 7-10 p.m. today at Hilo Town Tavern. Spam for the Hawaii Food Basket.” “The Hawaii Food Basket is an amazing organization because what they do remains local. They help Hawaii Island,” Gonzo noted. “What you do here doesn’t go to famine relief in some other country. It helps our own local people right here at home, our own ‘ohana.” Email John Burnett at jburnett@hawaiitribune herald.com. Photo: C.C. CAMPOS Got Chores & Errands?
