The first-ever University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center “Dance Collective” — a one-night performance that showcases choreographers and dancers from different dance studios in East Hawaii — is set to hit the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Dori Yamada, the show’s creator and director, has gathered a group of young and up-and-coming choreographers and dancers as well as established performers from Center Stage Dance Alliance, Island Dance Academy, N2 Dance and the UH-Hilo dance department. “There are so many talented individuals who care a great deal about dance and are always looking for opportunities to share and present their work,” Yamada says. “My hope is that this experience will act as a steppingstone to create bridges between all the dance entities, not only in Hilo, but all over.” Yamada says the various dance groups that were approached to be part of the “Dance Collective” were eager to participate. “Everyone was very supportive and excited to have the opportunity to showcase their work and to share their love of dance,” Yamada says. “At the very least, (this will) give each other the opportunity to see and experience a variety of dance that may inspire them in future creations, spark new collaborations.” Zoi Nakamura of Island Dance Academy, who choreographed the piece “The Monsters We’ve Made,” says she feels as though “Dance Collective” is a “monumental step in the right direction toward unifying the East Hawaii dance community.” Sept. 15 2016 CREDITS: Editor David Bock Writers John Burnett Katie Young Yamanaka Photography Hollyn Johnson Design Bonnie L.
